Akoustik exhibition

Akoustik is an innovative multidisciplinary exhibition that fully engages in re-contextualizing musical instruments in their authentic performance settings.

Curated by Guy Mushagalusa Chigoho, art curator and international expert on African art, Akoustik explores the links between the evolution of world music, musical genres, the emergence of new sounds and their relationship to traditional African musical instruments. The exhibition highlights the various socio-historical contexts that have shaped these relationships, with the primary aim of educating, entertaining and connecting visitors to the spiritual world through music.

Some of the exhibited instruments, which may have been out of use for decades, will be highlighted for the first time. Thanks to the rarity and exceptional quality of the objects on display, these pieces from the collection of the Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Music will will fill the soul of art enthusiasts seeking uniquely enriching experiences.

Produced and distributed by CCAM, Akoustik will offer a diverse panorama of instruments from all over Africa, revealing how the sound of these instruments has not only influenced African diasporic communities and their music across the world and the ages, but has also left a significant imprint on the global sonic and musical landscape.

The exhibition will be punctuated by several artistic and cultural mediation activities
