Triomphe : The Story of Gloria Clarke Baylis

Presented by the Montreal Afro-Canadian Cultural Centre (CCAM) and on display at the Sanaaq Centre from January 30 to March 8, 2026, this exhibition is a retrospective dedicated to Gloria Clarke Baylis, a nurse from Barbados and a pioneer of civil rights in Quebec and Canada.

In 1964, she filed the first recognized complaint of racial discrimination in employment, leading to a landmark verdict. She went on to found a successful business, making her one of the most important entrepreneurs in Canadian history.

Curated by historian Aly Ndiaye (alias WEBSTER), the exhibition offers an artistic and educational approach through archives, photographs, illustrations, and personal effects.

The exhibition is enhanced by a cultural outreach program that includes guided tours and two themed conferences on the fight against racial discrimination in Canada and female entrepreneurship.

Hours:

  • Monday to Saturday: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Sunday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

She Means Business: Women’s Entrepreneurship as an Act of Resistance

Presented by the Montreal Afro-Canadian Cultural Centre (CCAM) in collaboration with Audace au Féminin, the workshop She Means Business: Women's Entrepreneurship as an Act of Resistance will be held on March 8, 2026, at 3 p.m. at the Sanaaq Centre, marking the end of the exhibition dedicated to the history and legacy of Gloria Baylis.

To mark International Women's Rights Day, this event will bring together activism and entrepreneurship, two central aspects of Gloria Baylis's career. More than just an economic endeavor, entrepreneurship becomes an act of affirmation, opportunity creation, and social transformation.

Moderated by Dorothy Rhau, CEO and founder of Audace au Féminin, our special guest Tiffany Callender, CEO of the African Canadian Economic Federation (FACE), will share her perspectives and journey as an entrepreneur, as well as the challenges and successes that mark the entrepreneurial path of women, particularly Black women.

Designed as a guided, participatory conversation, this activity aims to be a space for inspiration, reflection, and action, inviting the public to consider how boldness, solidarity, and knowledge transfer can fuel the entrepreneurial trajectories of women today and tomorrow.

Annual CCAM x UdeM conference-debate (4th edition)

In celebration of Black History Month, the Montreal Afro-Canadian Cultural Centre (CCAM), in collaboration with the University of Montreal, presents the fourth edition of its annual conference and debate, to be held on February 11, 2026, at 6 p.m., in theAtrium of the MIL campus.

Entitled Intentions and Realities: EDI Under the Microscope of Black Communities, this meeting will be moderated by Cyrille Ekwalla, journalist and founder of NeoQuébec. It will bring together  Maudeleine Myrthil, president and CEO of Groupe 3737, Wilson Saintelmy, lawyer, researcher in global economic governance law, and lecturer in law at the University of Moncton, as well as Mariloue Daudier, senior advisor on equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) for the D2R initiative at McGill University.

This fourth edition offers an in-depth reflection on the relevance of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) policies in light of the realities and experiences of Black communities.

In a context where institutional commitments to EDI are multiplying, how are these policies translated into concrete action on the ground? Do they truly meet the needs and expectations of the communities concerned? This conference-debate invites the public to examine the gaps between intentions and reality, and to reflect collectively on the conditions necessary to build fairer, more inclusive environments that promote lasting change.

Triomphe : 60 years of a historic case that shaped justice

In 1965, Gloria Clarke Baylis broke down barriers of injustice by winning the first-ever legal victory in racial employment discrimination in Canada — an act of courage and determination that marked a historic turning point.

On December 8, at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel—now part of the Fairmont—relive this audacious era through passionate discussions with Montreal historian Dorothy Williams and Gloria Baylis's children. This is the very first conference dedicated to her life, her relentless struggle, and her triomphe.

This conference is the first in a series of activities organized by the CCAM to explore this historical case. It will also serve as a prelude to the exhibition "Triomphe : The Story of Gloria Clarke Baylis," on display from January 29 to March 8, 2026, at the Centre Sanaaq, curated by historian Aly Webster. The exhibition is a powerful invitation to explore the enduring struggles of Montreal's Black communities and to pay tribute to an activist and businesswoman whose commitment helped advance human rights.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to relive a crucial moment in our history and discover the courage of a figure who was determined to see justice prevail.
