Montreal's new Afro-Canadian Cultural Centre launches its first exhibition

Montreal's brand-new Montreal Afro-Canadian Cultural Centre (CCAM) holds its first exhibition until November 18. Featuring abstract works by Haitian-born artists Manuel Mathieu and Martine Fourcand, Âmes spéculaires : rencontre des générations symbolizes the CCAM's ambitions to represent the many faces of the cultural heritage of Montreal's Afro-descendant community.

For a very long time, we were locked into a very folkloristic vision of art in which there was a lot of color, it was entertaining and pretty.laments Martine Fourcand, a painter as well as a poet and scenographer.

We're getting away from the prettiness of it all, and we want to explore more deeply. We want the public to see us for what we really are: artists first and foremost.
